Parking Structure 4 at UC Davis Health’s Sacramento campus is a successful example of a human-centered design solution for an urban medical center. Designed for flow and a safe user experience, the entry and exits to the south side of the structure were relocated from the original plan so vehicular traffic is segregated from the pedestrian flow. This offers the user clarity and sets the tone for various wayfinding and lighting strategies. The use of ECO Falcon cameras for available stall detection and LED lighting provide the most technologically advanced systems available for the parking structure.

Reinforcing the horizontality of the campus’ aesthetics, integral color and form liners throughout the precast elements provide textures and tones. The structural layout reduces columns and increases opening sizes, focusing daylight into the center of the structure. Level indicators are located clearly on column faces, combined with directional signage.

Site design promotes a safe and intuitive user experience. Landscaping softens the impact of the structure on the surrounding residential neighborhood and integrates a nature walk with native species. Shuttle stops, bike shelters and bike share options are available at the main pedestrian exits, giving users safe access to their last mile of transportation. Security is intentional yet not obvious; implementing CPTED best practices.

Parking Structure 4 is designed to achieve Parksmart Silver certification.
